A weekend getaway to Italy

This May my classmates and I went on a school trip, a nice three-day getaway to Italy, during which we visited beautiful cities of Verona and Padua and the famous amusement park Gardaland.

On the first day we had to meet up at the bus stop at 8; when we all gathered, we got on the bus and it was time for our trip to begin. The first city we visited was Padua. It is a wonderful city located relatively close to Venice. When we arrived there, our first stop was the botanical garden. The garden is mesmorising, containing all kinds of plants, both local and  exotic, and we learned a lot of interesting facts there. After that we visited the magnificent Basilica of St. Anthony. We went inside the Basilica where we saw St. Anthony’s grave and a lot of beautiful art. My favourite part was going down the stairs and then looking up only to see a beautiful big window made out of stained glass. After seeing the Basilica we had free time in the center of the city. We had a great time exploring the city on our own, we visited lots of shops and we ate lots of food. The first day ended when we finally arrived at our hotel and crashed in bed.

The next day we visited the city of Verona where our guide took us to lots of different famous places. The first place we visited in Verona was  the Arena di Verona where we learned about the history of the amphitheater. After that we took a walk down the most expensive street in Verona which is called like that because it is the home of all the designer shops. Our next stop was Piazza dei Signori, a well-known place in Verona where lots of people come to set up their stand and sell all kinds of diffrent things. In the middle of the piazza there is an arch that has a big bone hanging from the top of it. Our guide told us a story behind the bone. The bone is a centuries-old whale rib and it is there because in the past it was used to advertise pharmacy which was directly below the arch (and which sold whale powder as a medicine). After the piazza we went to see the church of Saint Zeno. The church is beautiful from the outside but unfortunately we couldn’t go inside. We were pretty exhausted from visiting all those places so we were really happy when we were given the rest of the day free.

Our last day of the trip was the best. We spent the entire day at a famous amusement park Gardaland where we went on lots of rollercoaster rides. It was my first time in Gardaland and I had so much fun. My friends and I went on many scary and fun rides after which we had to rest a bit and eat some food to replenish our energy for more rides. This last day passed quickly and it was time to go home. Of course, we were all sad that we had to go but in the end I think that we were all happy to be back home.
